$16 Million in New Grant Funding Now Available for CalRecycle’s Organics Grant Program

Local governments are among those eligible to apply for $16 million in new grant funding, with $3 million awarded per grant.
The Organics Grant program is funded by California Climate Investments (CCI), a statewide program that allocates Cap-and-Trade dollars to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving public health, and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged and low-income communities. Over that last two years, the League urged the Legislature to allocate more Cap-and-Trade funding to CalRecycle in an effort to expand these very programs. These funds can be used to help cities implement SB 1383 regulations regarding organic waste diversion targets.
How to Apply
Local governments, private-for-profit bodies, state agencies, public universities and community colleges and non-profit organizations are eligible to apply, with a limit of only two applications per entity.
Eligible projects for grant funding include the construction, renovation or expansion of facilities to increase in-state infrastructure for the composting or digestion of organics into compost.
Projects must be located in California and result in permanent, annual and measurable reductions in greenhouse gas emissions and increases in quantity of green materials or food materials, newly diverted from landfill disposal or ADC use in California and composted or digested.
Applications must be submitted via CalRecycle’s Grant Management System by Nov. 7. Information on how to apply for the Organics Grant Program can be found online. Grants will be awarded in March 2020.
