Build a foundation of success for others at the 2024 Planning Commissioners Academy

The League of California Cities is seeking session proposals for the Planning Commissioners Academy, taking place March 6-8, 2024, in Long Beach. The academy will offer sessions for new commissioners, as well as seasoned planning commissioners in need of a refresher course or new strategies.

Cal Cities is seeking thorough, thoughtful, and complete proposals that tell how your session can help planning commissioners improve their communities, leadership abilities, and knowledge within their roles.

Noncommercial submissions from any individual, group, business, or organization on any topic are welcome. Session proposals must be submitted online by Monday, Sept. 11.

This conference offers panel discussions, speed sessions, facilitated discussions, and opportunities for keynote speakers. This year, members indicated an interest in the following topics:

  • Diversity, equity, and inclusion
  • Social media
  • Working with design teams and architects
  • How policy affects implementation
  • Handling city sprawl
  • Sustainability/energy as part of the planning process
  • Women in planning
  • Updating general plans
  • Dealing with public perception of a new development
  • Planning commissioners’ roles and responsibilities
  • CEQA
  • Solving problems with staff
  • Cannabis laws and issues
  • Disparities in access and opportunities
  • Deployment agreements
